An ancient site of Thassilon.

Runeforge was created as a place where agents of the seven Runelords could gather to study magic. Each runelord supported several minions who devoted their lives to study in this place of pure research. The results of their research were presented annually by means of a special ritual around a central pool or gate.

It was here that weapons were discovered that would be most effective against each of the various runelords. Known as Runeforged Weapons, the secret of their construction is currently unknown. However, some of the necessary components have been identified.

The runelords wove wards around Runeforge that barred entrance into the complex to any runelord or his direct agents, in order to keep the research within free from sabotage at the hands of an enemy. It was the one place in their various fiefdoms over which the runelords had no direct influence; the one place they could not visit, for fear of enraging the other six and causing an immense war.

Runeforge’s magical enhancements sustained those within without the need to eat, drink, or even sleep. While the inhabitants could still grow old and die, many extended their lives through magic or undeath. Still others planned their replacement through reproduction and indoctrination.

The final project the runelords set for Runeforge was the development of ways the runelords could escape the fall of their empire. Each faction developed a unique answer for its runelord, based upon the underlying principles of that faction’s magical traditions.

There are seven parts of Runeforge, each associated with one of the schools of Thassilonian Magic:
The Abjurant Halls of Envy
The Iron Cages of Lust
The Shimmering Veils of Pride
The Screaming Halls of Wrath
The Ravenous Crypts of Gluttony
The Vault of Greed
The Festering Maze of Sloth
